Every
student is different, learns differently and at their own pace, hence no one
study habbits and practices will work for all students. Here are some that
works for me.
don’t entertain distractions: when you study, just do
that-study! Studying while doing other things such as sending instant
messages(multitasking) makes your studying less effective. Doing this makes
recollection of information a lot more difficult. Especially in testing
situations.
Find
a quiet place to study: silence is good for focus and concentration, a
library is an ideal place when you are studying alone. An open outdoor space
that is cool and comfortable is ideal for group study,
Don’t
cumber yourself with the cares of life: an old adage states
“jackass say, world nuh level”. It is not possible for everything to every be
perfect at any point in life, therefore burdening yourself with your problems
will only result in stress and depression; psychological ills that are sure to
cause failure.
Study
in groups: group study helps you get a better
understanding of material being studied. Participation in the group gives the
opportunity to discuss material, clarify ambiguity, compare notes, and gain
different perspective and motivation to study for longer periods. An ideal study
group should have 3-5 persons. “Too many rats; dig bad hole”
Don’t
wait for last minute to study: last minute preparations
will only employ cramming of data into your brain and loss of sleep which may
be to your detriment. This kind of study practice usually leads the swatting of
information and even cheating.
Manage
your time well: schedule your time so you study 2 hours
out of class for every hour spent in class for the week. Take 5 minutes to
review notes from each course each day when you get home. Take a few minutes to
plan a study time and set goal; study for 30-45 minutes taking 5 minute breaks
at intervals to allow time for the brain to refresh itself and rebuild build
concentration.
Don’t
expect a miracle: sleeping with a text book or note book
under our pillow or on your face will not miraculously cause knowledge
transfer.
